Does Your Website Have a “Dashcam”?

Today, litigation is everywhere. While there are two sides to every story, and most people are honest, life goes a lot more smoothly when you have irrefutable evidence to back up your position.

That is why “dashcams” in cars are becoming so popular. With the push of a button, you can transfer a file that documents exactly what happened including the time and the date.

So, why would a website need that kind of protection? Well, your website is technically a public record. You hold a level of responsibility for the information that it presents (pages, documents, pictures, etc.).  Additionally, there are a lot of regulations that an organization’s website must meet, especially if they receive public funding.

For example, in 2018 alone, there were 2285 website lawsuits related to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

So how do you defend yourself if:

  • Someone claims that a page on your website (say, from two months ago) was not ADA compliant (and they have a copy of the page that seems to substantiate their complaint)?.

  • Someone claims the job description listed on the website did not match the job description they were asked to sign.

For the Placer County Office of Education, it’s easy, because they’ve installed the website equivalent of an “Dashcam”.

Their website is built in Microsoft SharePoint.  The way their site is architected stores all of the sites pages and all of the site’s documents in two separate libraries. SharePoint makes it easy to configure these libraries for “automatic versioning”.  As a result, their website automatically saves every version of every page and every document that has ever been used in the site.  What’s more, it easily allows them to electronically or physically, provide proof of exactly what was presented down to the day and minute.

The only thing better than knowing that your site is compliant with the latest regulations is being able to prove it, easily.
