Using Teams to Implement Companywide Communications
So, you are building a new corporate intranet. The plan is to put a communications hub at the top and then deploy individual SharePoint team sites for each department.
Each department site will include a Teams group so that members of the department can easily communicate and collaborate with each other.
That is great, but how do you communicate with the company as a whole?
Sure, each department can communicate amongst themselves, but how do you send a message or conduct a meeting that spans multiple departments or even the entire company?
The logical approach would be to deploy a team site from the communications hub acting as the entrance to your intranet. Unfortunately, a communication site does not support implementing a connected “Team” to it.
A possible strategy would be to create a normal departmental team site dedicated to companywide communications and call it something like “Communications”. Use the communications site to create a companywide “Team” and add all the employees to it.
Now you have a companywide capability for chat messaging and even video presentations.
One proviso, governance is going to play a big role in this “communications” site and its corresponding “Teams” group being used effectively. You are going to need to be very clear about who is able to contribute and who is able to simply “view”. It is going to be especially important that management understands that anything shared through this “Team” (including documents) is able to be seen by everyone in the company.
